Teacher’s Corner

IMG_5674The staff gathered here truly love what they do and want to be here with your child. Some have education degrees and some have early childhood degrees. Every staff member keeps abreast of new developments in the early childhood field through annual training. Teachers are expected to receive a minimum of 25 hours of training each school year. They obtain these hours through local or state early childhood conferences. They are dedicated to giving each child the feeling of being loved and accepted in a Christian environment. With God’s help, we strive to provide you and your child with a positive early learning experience.

Cathy Shisler, Preschool Director; 2009 – present

Early Childhood Education in Lutheran congregations has been one of my greatest passions since 1986. I had the privilege of teaching for over twenty years with two and three year olds in two other Lutheran Preschools, one here in Houston and one in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mark and I have two grown sons, Aaron and Adam that are married and live in the Houston area. I  became a grandmother three years ago. What fun to have a grandbaby to love and spoil.  We enjoy our family time when we can get together with them. Our boys attended a Lutheran school in Houston and as parents, we were very involved in the School Board, and Parent/Teacher Volunteering to help their school.I am a part of the Fishers of Men Lutheran Church family. The goal for Little Fishers Preschool is to make it a safe, fun learning environment where we can praise Jesus too! We want all our families to feel welcome and to know we care about each one of them. Every day the staff opens with devotion and prays for our students, and their families. Kelly, my assistant, or I would love to give you a tour of our great preschool. We have so much to share with you regarding our staff, schedule, curriculum, and enrichment classes. Please call to schedule a time or just come by.

Kelly DeLozier, Assistant Director; 2016 – Present
Administrative Assistant; 2010 – 2016
Teacher’s Assistant/Motor Skills Teacher; 2009-2010

After my youngest child started Kindergarten, God presented me with a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the preschool that he attended. I started as a Teacher’s Assistant/Motor Skills Teacher in 2009, accepted the position of Administrative Assistant in 2010, and was just recently named the Assistant Director.  After moving to various places, including New Zealand, with my husband’s company, we decided to make Houston our permanent home. Steve and I have two children, Victoria, 15, and Aidan, 12. I feel so blessed that God has put me in the midst of such wonderful people, both Little Fishers staff and our Little Fishers families. It is a joy to get to know our Little Fishers families, see their smiling faces every day, and have the opportunity to share the love of Christ with them.

I was born in Hong Kong and raised in Oakland, CA. Oakland had been my home for thirty-two years. For past twenty years, I was a Social Worker for people from 0 to 106 years old. My main focus had been to advocate, educate, and provide services to the Asian/Pacific Islander population. My sincere desire is to work with children of all ages and for the sake of God, I hopes to serve Him to the end.

Pam Scheffer, 3 Year Old Teacher; 2001-2014 and 2016 – Present

I am so happy to be teaching again at Little Fishers Preschool. I am married and both my husband and I are native Houstonians. We have two daughters, an awesome son-in-law, and an adorable grandson named Noah. My oldest daughter is a second grade teacher at Sugar Mill Elementary in Sugar Land. My youngest daughter graduated from Sam Houston State University last May and is currently on staff at Fort Bend Christian Academy
I was a teacher at Little Fishers Preschool for 13 years and loved coming to work every day and teaching God’s littlest lambs. When my grandson was born, I took a couple of years off to care for him. In the two years that I was away, I knew that I did not want to close the door on a being a part of the best preschool in Sugar Land. I then joined the Little Fishers Preschool School Board so that I could still feel as if I was part of the school.
Little Fishers Preschool is very much a part of my heart. My youngest daughter also attended the preschool after we joined Fishers of Men Church. (It was called Fishers of Men Preschool back then). I am very excited to be on staff again.

Denise McAndrews, 3 Year Old Teacher; 2013 – Present

I am blessed to have this opportunity to teach at Little Fishers Preschool. I taught at Faith Lutheran Preschool, Sugar Land for 7 years. They closed the school and it was a sad day for many of us. God’s words come to mind, “God will never close one door that he doesn’t open”. I have three children of my own, one son and twin daughters. I am proud to have three grandchildren, one girl and two boys. I was a stay at home mom and feel blessed that I had the opportunity to stay home. I am looking forward to a new school year. Teaching little children is truly a gift from God.

Hannah Cuna, 3 Year Old Teacher and Pre-K Teacher’s Assistant; 2016 – Present

This is my first year working at Little Fishers Preschool. It is a blessing and a privilege to be working in this wonderful school. I used to teach at Sugar Grove Christian School as an afterschool teacher and teacher’s aide.
I was born in the Philippines and moved here eight years ago with my family. I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology in the Philippines. I have a passion for teaching and working with children. I used to volunteer my time in an orphanage and a play therapy therapy facility back home. I would like to pursue further education to help kids more. Besides teaching, I am into photography and the arts. I love to paint and I do calligraphy as well. I am looking forward to a fun filled school year with your child.

Linda Cardenas, 4 Year Old Pre-K Teacher; 2009 – Present

I am beginning my 8th year as a Pre-K teacher here at Little Fishers Preschool.  I received my BA from Stephen F. Austin State University with a double major in Sociology and Business.  I have been teaching preschool for 17 years.  My husband Luis and I have been married for 25 years and have lived in the Houston area for 19 years.  Our 22 year old daughter, Kristina, is a student at the University of Houston, majoring in Elementary Education.  Teaching preschool was not in my original plans.  It was something that came later in life.  When my daughter was in Kindergarten, I spent a lot of time volunteering in her classroom and loved it.  Her teacher told me I was a natural-born teacher and that I should pursue it, which I did.  I’ve never looked back. It’s a new adventure every day.  Other than being a mom, teaching is the most fun, challenging and rewarding thing I’ve ever done.

Mary Metzger, Pre-K Teacher; 2016 – Present

This is my first year teaching at Little Fishers Preschool and I am excited to be here! I was born and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Outside of teaching, I play French Horn in the Houston Concert Band and play ice hockey. I am also the Children’s Ministry Coordinator here at Fishers of Men Lutheran Church. I look forward to getting to know your children, watching them learn about the world around them and grow in faith and love!

Joy Philips, Pre-K Teacher; 2016 – Present

This is my first year at Little Fishers Preschool and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to teach at this school. I will be teaching the Pre-K 3-day class. I have 7 years of preschool teaching experience at Sugar Grove Christian School which is now closed.
My husband, Steve and I have been married for 26 years and have lived in the Houston area for 18 years. We have two daughters, 23 and 18 years old. Both are in college. The oldest is pursuing a pharmacy degree at UH and the youngest will be attending UNT this fall for a degree in communication design.
I have a BSN degree and worked in the medical field for over 20 years. When my youngest came along, I decided to be a stay-at-home Mom for several years and then eventually retired from nursing. During this time, I volunteered whenever I could at my daughter’s school and at Sunday school. It was an amazing experience! I had so much fun with the kids.
I am very passionate about teaching young children. I love watching them learn and grow. It is both challenging and rewarding.
